Thunderstorms & Flooding Expected In North Texas
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
All of the ingredients are coming together for an active night of thunderstorms in North Texas.
The air is getting a little muggy. You can probably feel that. We have a dry line off to our west. There is a strong upper level low over New Mexico heading for us. And, you have an area of low pressure at the surface in Oklahoma.
All of these elements are key ingredients for severe weather and heavy rain.
The timing of the storms will likely play out like this: most of the daylight hours will be dry. There could be a few areas of light rain and drizzle before 5 p.m., but no widespread thunderstorms are expected before 5 p.m. I certainly can't rule out a pop-up storm, but most areas will remain quiet. It is later this evening and overnight tonight when strong storms arrive.
West of DFW will see the worst weather first this evening, as a line of thunderstorms marches towards North Texas. This line will likely contain severe thunderstorms. If storms can develop out ahead of that squall line, these could possible produce a tornado. I will be watching for these storms closely.
The before mentioned squall line will be arriving in the metro area after midnight. It will definitely be tough to sleep with lightning and high winds rattling your home.
Tuesday will start off with those strong storms, then we will likely see a break in the rain around midday and afternoon. But another round of storms is possible Tuesday evening and Tuesday night.
Most of North Texas is under a Flash Flood Watch through Wednesday morning. Most areas will receive 1 to 2 inches of rain. But several spots will likely pick up 3 to 4 inches with some areas getting even more!
Always remember, if you come across a road covered with water, "Turn Around, Don't Drown." Flooding is the number one weather killer, so please be very careful.
And be sure to stay with CBS 11 News and CBS11TV.COM for the very latest on this potentially dangerous weather situation.
