Significant Rain Event Coming To North Texas

Large Portions Of North Texas Could See 2-4 Inches Of Rain

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Wednesday looks to be another cloudy day as warm, moist air a few thousand feet above the ground rides up and over the shallow cool air here at the surface. So, don't expect to see much, if any, sunshine.

We are on the north side of a warm front that is draped over Central Texas. This means Wednesday should be mild after a cool start. Expect a high temperature near 69 degrees.

As our upper level flow continues out of the southwest, small disturbances will trigger a few Wednesday showers (30 percent chance), but nothing all that heavy and certainly not severe.

We will have another one of those overnights where temperatures warm into the mid-70s by Thursday morning. The reason is the warm front, which will be moving north through our area. This can often trigger fog as well, so we could be dealing with reduced visibilities like we saw on Tuesday morning.

Showers and thunderstorms will become more likely as we head into Thursday afternoon. We will be in warm, unstable air as a strong upper level storm system approaches, along with a strong cold front.

I'm forecasting high temperatures in the upper 80s! The chance of storms during Thursday afternoon is around 50 percent, and some of the storms have the potential to turn severe.

The main event will start up Thursday evening and last into Friday as the cold front and storm system slowly moves across North Texas. Widespread showers and thunderstorms will accompany these features (near 100 percent chance of rain) with a copious amount of moisture.

Many computer models are showing heavy rainfall is likely, to the tune of two to four inches. There could be significant flooding, especially dangerous at night when it's harder to tell how deep the water is covering the roadways.

There is a Flash Flood Watch already in effect for all of North Texas starting at 1 p.m. on Thursday and lasting until 7 p.m. on Friday. We should see the rain come to an end Friday morning, however, and hopefully a bit of sunshine by Friday afternoon.

That will lead us into a quiet weather weekend.
