Storms May Bring Flash Flooding To DFW
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The advertised warm front moved through the DFW area overnight and temperatures rose into the 70s for Thursday morning. The front also brought dense fog in many areas. DFW Airport had visibilities reduced to less than a quarter of a mile for a few hours.
As the warmer air continues to push northward, the fog is lifting. Replacing the fog are warm, humid and windy conditions. Look for south winds gusting up to 30 mph on Thursday with highs in the mid-to-upper 80s.
By Thursday afternoon, we do expect scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop. Expect about 50 percent coverage with some of the storms possibly severe. There is a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms over a good portion of North Texas on Thursday. The threats are large hail, damaging wind and we could even see a few tornados in the strongest storms.
We are anticipating a Tornado Watch in parts of the area on Thursday. In addition, these storms will be producing quite a bit of rainfall, leading to flash flooding. A Flash Flood Watch is posted from 1 p.m. Thursday until 7 p.m. Friday evening.
Widespread rain will start to occur after sundown on Thursday. Expect a solid line of strong thunderstorms to slowly push through all of North Texas starting late in the evening and lasting into Friday morning. The storms will be along a strong, but slow-moving cold front moving west to east. Rainfall amounts could quickly approach two to four inches by Friday morning over a good chunk of North Texas.
Flash flooding is especially dangerous at night when drivers cannot see how deeply the water is covering roadways. Be sure to have a NOAA Weather Radio nearby to alert you if flooding materializes in your neck of the woods.
Heavy rain will be shifting east of Dallas during the Friday morning hours, with clouds very slow to clear out of North Texas. Temperatures will drop significantly behind the cold front. We will be in the 50s most of Friday with breezy north winds.
We could see some clearing by late Friday afternoon, but most of our computer information is showing clouds until sunset.
Then, mostly sunny skies on Saturday and mostly cloudy skies on Sunday. It will be a very mild weekend, if not cool. Lows in the mornings should be in the 40s! High temperatures in the mid-60s both days.
