Strong Thunderstorms Heading Our Way
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A quiet, cool and sunny Wednesday morning will give way to a mostly cloudy, warm and windy Wednesday afternoon.
As low pressure strengthens out west, our wind will pick up out of the southeast at 20 to 30 mph. This will help pump plentiful gulf moisture into North Texas, so it will be more humid later as well.
Look for high temperatures in the mid-70s on Wednesday. Clouds will increase and we will have clouded over altogether by sundown.
After midnight, storms should start forming in western Texas and marching eastward. A strong cold front along with the powerful upper level trough will be the triggers.
A warm front also working up from the south could trigger scattered severe storms overnight as well. Storms should arrive in our western counties by 3 a.m. or so, in the DFW Metro area by 6 a.m. or so, and our eastern counties by 9 a.m. Thursday morning.
All of North Texas is under a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms Wednesday night and Thursday. The big threats will be high wind, larger hail, frequent lightning and even possible tornadoes. Expect a Tornado Watch later Wednesday night if conditions continue to point to a significant severe weather event.
A Flash Flood Watch has already been issued for the eastern two-thirds of North Texas starting at 4 a.m. Thursday and lasting all day. We could see one to three more inches of rain on top of a very wet ground.
Look for the morning thunderstorms and rain to move into the east Texas by early afternoon Thursday. We will remain cloudy and turn chilly, with wind behind the cold front switching to the northwest.
Temperatures will hover in the upper 50s most of Thursday, without much or any sunshine. Another upper disturbance by late in the day could trigger a few lighter showers by Thursday evening.
A few areas of light rain are possible early in the day Friday, then slowly decreasing clouds. Friday will be cool with high temperatures near 60 degrees.
And great weather by the weekend, thankfully! Look for sunshine with high temperatures in the mid-60s to near 70 degrees, and low temperatures in the 40s.
