Strong Storms Expected Across North Texas

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― WEEKEND WASHOUT?

Well, not quite. But each day this weekend there will showers and thunderstorms across North Texas. Sunday will likely be the day with the highest rain coverage.

UPPER LEVEL LOW

The upper level low that is currently over Colorado will be moving toward North Texas over the next few days. This will bring a pocket of cool air in the mid-levels of the atmosphere right over North Texas. When you heat air up at the surface and that air rises into cooler air, it will continue to rise and produce thunderstorms. This will be a slow moving system. So, rain chances will stay in the forecast through Thursday of next week.

FRIDAY NIGHT

Partly cloudy skies and seasonably cool. There could be an isolated shower in our Red River counties overnight, but areas will stay dry.

SATURDAY

A complex of thunderstorms will roll out of the Panhandle in the morning and try to work their way into North Texas. The expectation is that these storms will not make it to Dallas and Fort Worth, but they will be watched closely. I am going to put the rain chance on Saturday at 30 percent, with the best coverage or rain being to the west of Fort Worth.

SUNDAY

This day will feature higher coverage of rain up around 50 percent. I expect strong, possibly even severe storms during the afternoon on Sunday.

MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY

These three days have the potential to be quite wet. Strong storms with very heavy rain are possible. One concern I have is for localized flooding. With round after round of storms, some areas could see over 5 inches. Even though a lot of the rain will absorbed by the dry ground, so much in just a few days could lead to some issues.
