Wet Weather Delays North Texas Road Projects
NORTH TEXAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The rain has stopped, for now, but the recent wet weather has put a damper on some North Texas road projects.
One of the projects that the weather delayed is the restriping of Interstate-635, between the High-5 and Interstate-35.
The rain has delayed other projects as well.
Some say the weather has been a mixed blessing. The rain has been good for some. "A lot of people need it for grass and whatnot," said North Texas driver Latrell Nelson. But officials with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) say the rain has caused a slowdown. "When you're looking at a project, anything to do with dirt work, it's going to impact a project," explained Cynthia Northrupwhite with TxDOT.
For example, the I-635 restriping project was due to begin earlier this month and already be complete. But, with the rain delays the project won't be complete until the middle of next month.
The weather has also put a temporary stop to the project at I-30, near I-635.
Officials with TXDOT say it's too early to tell if the wet weather will have any impact on a long-term project's deadline, or the financial bottom line. "We've got some time built into the contingencies for weather," Northrupwhite said. "[But] there's potential to impact the cost for sure."
TxDOT workers say they were relieved the weather was dry this past weekend for crews to demolish the Harwood Bridge, for the Woodall Rodgers deck park. "They got in, got it done early, which is a good thing. If they would have been longer it would have gone into the rain we got Sunday night," Northrupwhite said of the fast work.
