Downpours Causing Flooding Across North Texas

(CBS 11 News) A Flash Flood Warning continues until 6pm for Collin County.

Parts of Collin County, especially between Allen and Fairview, just east of 75-North, have picked up between 4" and 8" of rain. One report had rain estimates near Fairview of 8.16".

Wednesday afternoon a creek in Fairview had taken on the appearance of a river and overtook Al Gienger's backyard. "It's flooding and it's flooding… much more than we expected," he said.

Slow moving showers and thunderstorms are to blame, and more are continuing to develop this afternoon - over the same rain-soaked areas.

More showers, with heavy rain, will be possible the remainder of the afternoon. 1-3" of rain could fall in some of the heavier downpours.

Fairview floodwaters stopped short of the inside of Rich Hickman's house. He says while his property has flooded before – this is by far the worst.

Hickman and other residents blame the problem on area development. "When you take away a lot of land and put in concrete and a lot of houses everything flows downstream a lot faster than it used to. I think that's part of the problem," he explained.

Area engineers blame the flooding on too much rain, in too little time.

Forecasting where new showers and thunderstorms will develop is very difficult; however most of the activity is expected to be in the northern and eastern counties. Coverage should be between 40-50% this afternoon and slowly taper off overnight tonight.

Ten houses were flooded in the City of Parker. Mayor Joe Cordina said it's the, "worst rain we've had in 10 years."

The upper level disturbance creating the instability is located right over the Dallas/Fort Worth area this afternoon, but it will slowly begin to move east and northeast bringing a gradual end to the precipitation, at least temporarily, the next few days. We still expect a few more showers with heavy downpours tomorrow, but the majority of the rain will shift into east and northeast Texas.

Don't put those umbrellas away yet! Rain chances go back up again later this weekend and continue into early next week.
