Ike-Damaged Galveston Park To Reopen This Month

GALVESTON (AP) ― A section of Hurricane Ike-damaged Galveston Island State Park will reopen March 21, more than six months after the storm hit.

Members of the group Friends of Galveston Island State Park will volunteer as guides.

President Shirley Foster says the organization became more involved after being told "the park would be closed there would be zilch, nothing."

The Galveston County Daily News reported Monday that weekend programs of beach, bay and bird walks as well as kayaking, fishing and crabbing will resume.

The north side of the park will be the first area to reopen.

Project manager Hans Haglund says crews had to basically rebuild the park, since a lot of facilities and major infrastructure were washed away by Ike.

Hundreds of volunteers helped.
