Some Dallas Apartment Residents Living With No A/C

Marianne Martinez
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― During one of the hottest weekends of the year, some Dallas residents are actually going outside to cool off. The residents of the Oaklawn Heights apartment complex say they have been without air conditioning since Friday.

"It felt like a sauna when you opened the door," said Brandy Moser, a resident.

Moser said she felt warm air coming out of the vents. She and her family have been trying to stay cool by keeping the lights off, drinking plenty of water and using fans. She also worries about the elderly, children and the sick.

"My dad has emphysema and my oldest son has asthma, and we've been telling them they can't live like this," Moser said. "Nobody can, but especially when you're sick."

Residents say they are tired of paying more than $700 in rent and more than $100 in utilities to live here. Many of them want to move, but this weekend they are just worried about getting out of the heat.

"Temperature says 87 degrees," said resident Wendy Sarmiento, as she reads the thermometer inside her apartment. "But it feels hotter."

The residents said they started complaining to the apartment managers when they noticed the problem. The apartment manager told CBS 11 she didn't receive any complaints until this morning. They are working to get the air conditioning repaired.
