North Texans Seem To Be Enjoying Random Snow Day

North Texas Winter Storm Warning In Effect Until Friday Morning

NORTH TEXAS (CBS 11 News) ― Old Man Winter rolled into North Texas a few hours ahead of schedule, catching many people off guard.

North Texans seemed to be torn between playing in the snow or locking themselves inside the safety and heat of their home.

The decision of many Flower Mound residents seemed clear as no one could be seen out and about in the downtown area. Beginning at 2 p.m., the snow fell consistently for two hours and showed no signs of letting up.

"They remind me of cotton balls, and they are falling slanted, which tells you how hard the wind is blowing," said CBS 11 reporter Pam Harris.

As of 4 p.m., four to six inches of snow was reported in Denton County.

Near the University of North Texas, a mix of sand and snow caked the roadways. CBS 11 Reporter Joel Thomas said the snow had been falling for four straight hours.

"It's scary since this is the first time I've driven in snow," said a motorist in Denton wearing a TWU sweatshirt.

In Wise County, officials reported every single major highway was impassable, leaving 100 motorists stranded.

CBS 11's Stephanie Lucero reported from DFW. She said the rain turned to snow at 12:30 p.m., causing over 200 cancellations at the airport.

"I don't like it," said one North Texan. "I'm ready for summer. It's March in Texas – it should be warm!"

Many schools were planning for tomorrow and instead found themselves sending kids home early today.

"The parents got here early, and we literally phoned into the school to let them know which of our children to bring out as we waited in our cars" said parent Sam Reen.

At the Math, Science and Technology Magnet School in Richardson, parents were called to come pick up their children around 2:00 this afternoon. Those who don't take the bus were escorted by school administrators carrying umbrellas.

The students were literally hand delivered to their parents waiting in their cars.

Collin County received its fair share of snow too. Many residents seemed to share the same sentiment as Emily Westbrook: "I was sliding on an overpass – It was scary!"

While John Mallow of Collin County said he just "should have stayed home," many other CBS 11 viewers showed us how they braved the wintry mix by sending in hundreds of photos.
