Winter Weather Blankets North Texas

North Texas Winter Storm Warning In Effect Until Friday Morning

NORTH TEXAS (CBS 11 News) ―

Flakes as big as dinner plates!  Well isn't everything bigger and better in Texas?

The upper level system that has brought us a real taste of winter is grabbing North Texas and shaking us; but remember, this is March, this to shall pass. Pretty outside isn't it?

We continue under a Winter Storm Warning until tomorrow. Johnson, Ellis, Kaufman, Van Zandt, and Rains Counties are under a winter weather advisory.

Many areas have already reported snow amounts over the 5" mark with more to come.  The heaviest snow will be in the northern and northeastern counties.  Another report just in - 9" in Krum.

Hundreds of accidents are being reported across North Texas as the winter weather moves across the area. Heavy snow bands continue to develop across western North Texas.

We're looking at a transition of rain, into sleet, and sleet/snow as the afternoon progresses. Currently temperatures are at or above the freezing mark in most parts. The transition will be slow and long, with areas close to the freezing mark, west and northwest of Fort Worth, receiving the most snow.

Four inches of snow has already fallen in Mineral Wells and Sanger.
Gainesville has received three inches and up to six inches of snow is possible near the Red River.

DFW International Airport is currently under an Airport Weather Emergency. So far a total of 200 flights for the afternoon and evening have been canceled because of weather. Passengers are being advised to call ahead to check the status of their flight.

At 3 p.m., Oncor reported 3,400 outages in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

The winter storm warning is in effect until 6 a.m. Friday. By tomorrow this storm system will be a memory as the sun starts clearing skies from the west to the east. Lingering clouds in the DFW area will help keep temperatures in the low to mid 40s while areas to the southwest near Eastland and Comanche may reach the mid 50s.

By Saturday more seasonal temperatures will begin returning with lows in the 40s by Sunday and 65-70 by mid-week.
