Strong Winds, Hail, Tornadoes Possible Thursday

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― A dynamic weather system will be moving into North Texas on Thursday. Large hail, high winds and isolated tornadoes are possible with these storms.

The greatest tornado threat appears to be just to the north of DFW along the Red River. But it is important to point out that at any time a severe thunderstorm could drop a tornado.

Here's a look at the weather timeline.

We will start Thursday with a few showers and even a few isolated thunderstorms in the morning as a warm front lifts northward.

Temperatures will be in the 60s and the winds will increase as we go through the morning. It will be quite breezy during the afternoon as winds pick up out of the south at 20 to 30 mph.

Temperatures will warm into the low 80s if we see some sunshine in the afternoon. As we warm up and the air gets more humid, showers and thunderstorms will develop.

The timing of the storms remains a bit uncertain, but everyone should be prepared for severe storms to develop during the afternoon and especially in the evening on Thursday.

At this point it appears storms will likely develop along the dry line, which should set up to the west of DFW in the afternoon.

The question is how close that dry line is to the metro area during the afternoon. A few of our forecast models are suggesting the dry line might be closer, meaning storms would be in the metro area during the afternoon.

The majority of the models though are suggesting the dry line will stay well to the west, meaning storms stay to the west during the afternoon. There in lies the timing problem.

Regardless of the timing of the storms with the dry line, a cold front will eventually move through the area early Friday morning. I do expect to see showers and thunderstorms Thursday night and Friday morning ahead of the cold front.

It will be a little on the cool side Friday with highs in the 60s, and we will drop into the 40s Saturday morning. However the weekend will be dry and pleasant with highs in the 70s on Saturday and Sunday.
