With summer around the corner, you might be looking for things to keep your kids entertained without busting your budget. CBS 11 has found a way to find the fun that won't cost you a dime.
Arlington mother, Sarah Milem, has a lot going on at home.
"We've got me and my husband, Zack, and a 1 and 2 year old," Milem said. "We also have my cousin and her 2 year old that live with us."
She's always looking for something to do to keep everyone entertained for free. She says the running joke in the house is if it can't be done for $2 or less, they won't do it. From museums and parks, to nature preserves, and even arts and craft classes, Milem says there's no shortage of free family entertainment.
"We could take the kids to rodeo lessons at the Fort Worth Stockyards for free," she said. "The Boy Scout Museum is free on Mondays."
The Dallas Museum of Art is free on Thursday evenings, and on the first Tuesday of the month. The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is free on Wednesdays, and the first Sunday of the month as well.
"The Dallas Museum of Art has entire Friday nights dedicated to families where it's free admission and they have crafts and things geared just for the kids," Milem said.
Home Depot and Lowes have fun and free things for kids, too. Both stores offer craft workshops where kids can build things like bird houses and CD cases. Milem says her kids go all the time and love the interactions they have.
Barbara Arnondin, co-founder of Metroplex Baby and Kids, says their website offers a comprehensive child-friendly events calendar.
"We've taken everything that's going on in and around the metroplex that's appropriate for families, and we've organized it by location," Arnondin said. "It gives them the opportunity to bond without having to spend money."
On May 2nd and 3rd, we found more than a dozen free events happening all over Dallas, Fort Worth, and surrounding areas. Teach your kids to dance for free at the Dance for the Planet event in Dallas on Saturday. On Sunday in Richardson, let the kids get their hands dirty at the Cottonwood Arts Festival where they can learn potter, clay works, and painting. If your kids like to fish, check out the Kids Fish event in Flower Mound on Saturday where they're stocked with 1,000 catfish!
"It's important to go out and learn about your city and learn about the different things nature has to offer right outside your window," Arnondin said.
Milem says for her family, the fun never stops.
"Why spend $100 on something your kid may or may not like when you can go for free," she questioned.
