Arlington Hopes To Turn Pain At The Pump Into $$

ARLINGTON (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― So what will it be this summer? Will it be a trip to San Antonio or maybe the "Big Easy?" If you're trying to get out of "Dodge" this time of year, one thing you won't be able to dodge is high gas prices.

"Who can afford to fill up their tank and go anywhere," said Jack Pierce of Deleon, Texas. "A 20-gallon tank will cost you $80."

That's exactly why the City of Arlington is betting your vacation may just turn out to be a "staycation."

"Instead of going somewhere far, why not spend it closer to home," said Jay Burress of the Arlington Convention & Visitors Bureau. "Save the gas money and spend it on fun."

City tourism officials put together a 30 second advertisement aimed directly at those who live in towns and cities within a two-hour drive from Arlington.

The ads are running in Wal-Mart. The spots can be viewed on video monitors that greet customers while they wait to check out.

Arlington is hoping to persuade North Texans to forget about long-driving trips and instead, save their gas money by vacationing closer to home.

City leaders believe that Six Flags, Hurricane Harbor or a Rangers' baseball game offers a nearby option that may save local travelers hundreds of dollars in gas money.

The ads will run in more than 30 Wal-Mart stores throughout the month of June.
