As part of a 'Student Athlete Appreciation Day', a Lewisville doctor is offering free school physicals to the public.
Workers at
Main Street Medical Care said given the tough economic situation the promotion was "developed to promote health screening and awareness for children and teens in the Lewisville and Carrollton communities".
The free physicals will be offered on August 22nd, from 9 am to 5pm.
In a press release the clinic director for Main Street Medical Care, Dr. David Zahaluk, said, "One of the key health concerns for the student athlete is a heart condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). It is a congenital condition which results in an asymmetric enlargement of the left ventricle, the heart's main pumping chamber. Under exercise conditions, the outflow tract of the left ventricle becomes blocked by the enlarged muscle, resulting in cardiovascular collapse and sudden death."
Doctors say some of the risk factors for HCM include having had a family member die suddenly during exercise and having a personal history of fainting during exercise. The condition has very few warning signals and often presents with sudden death in an otherwise healthy athlete.
The free school physicals will include testing for HCM and more. The examinations will include screening for scoliosis, eating disorders, lymphoma and a host of other common, serious conditions.
The
Main Street Medical Care Family Practice and Urgent Care office is located at 571 West Main Street, Lewisville, Texas 75057. The office is across from Medical Center of Lewisville.
