One Tank Trip: Rough Creek Lodge

The
Rough Creek Lodge in Glen Rose was recently named one of the top destinations in the world.
"When people drive out here from the city, they're surprised at the openness, the freedom they find here in the country," said Rough Creek Lodge General Manager Paul Boccafogli.
Ten years ago the owner of a pharmaceutical company opened Rough Creek as a corporate retreat.
"We've had London, Sri Lanka, Jakarta, Germany, Japan... a lot of companies in Dallas are international companies, so they bring them out for their Texas experience," said Boccafogli.
The 11,000-acre lodge offers one-of-a kind- weddings, which became one of the top five places in the world to get married, according to a national morning television show. Officials recently built an on-site chapel to accommodate guests.
"People come from all over the world to have their wedding here," said Boccafogli. "Word of mouth is our biggest advertisement."
With world class hunting, fishing and horseback riding, Rough Creek caters to a guest's every whim.
"We boast on our Web site that we have 82 things to do at Rough Creek Lodge," said Boccafogli. "A family of four can come out here for two days and really not participate in all the activities -- from ATVs to a family pool, to a zip-line, climbing walls, a zoo petting all the animals."
The Kemp family of Dallas agrees. "Getting out of Dallas for a couple days is really key to us," said Greg Kemp, the father of the family. "It's a little different bringing the kids, but it's actually relaxing! You know when they hit the bed at 8:30 and they crash, it's been a good day!"
Six-year-old Margaret loves the zip-line best "It's really fast," she said. "It's really fun!"
"You save money on traveling and get more bang for your buck on vacation," said Cayce Kemp, Margaret's mother. "You get to spend more time actually vacationing instead of waiting on delayed airplanes."
Whenever you come to this 57-room resort, travel writers say the customer service and exceptional cuisine catapulted the local lodge to world-wide fame.
What may hook you on this Glen Rose destination is that it's just one tank away.
"We've been around the country on some road trips this summer, and this is by far the best place we've been to," said Greg Kemp.
August specials at Rough Creek include a 3-course dinner, breakfast and a guestroom starting at $149 per night. Kids under 5 eat and stay free.
